Doe decision defines front lines as right here
Jun/11/2009

Few knew
The 1973 press accounts told us that Roe legalized abortion for just the first trimester of pregnancy, totally misunderstanding the decision. Of course, we now know that the Roe decision went much further.
In the second trimester, Roe placed no limits on abortion, only allowing states to pass laws on who and where abortions are performed. And in the third trimester, Roe allowed states to limit abortions—but not where the life or “health” of the mother is in any danger.
The word “health” was defined by another decision handed down that day, the Doe v. Bolton decision from the state of Georgia.
Doe gives us third trimester abortion
In the Doe decision, the Court held that “health” would be defined by The World Health Organization (WHO). WHO’s definition of health is one’s physical, emotional or familial well being—essentially anything falls under this broad umbrella.
So regardless of any state laws, a woman could walk into an abortion clinic in the last day of pregnancy and claim that her mental health would be harmed by giving birth—and the Court would be satisfied.
Today
Little has changed since 1973. We have some parental consent laws across the country, and informed consent laws. They are a start. But third trimester abortion is protected by Roe—and Doe.
The front lines
Yet, while the courts make decisions on the “constitutionality” of various laws, the front lines are elsewhere.
Each day, women across America come to centers like ours—unsure of where to turn or what to do.
They need a shoulder to lean on, and a listening ear. And in many cases, they need practical help.
They need someone to tell them there is hope, and there are life giving options.
The front lines are not only in the courts—they are right here. Thank you to all of you who stand with us daily—on the front lines. We appreciate you, because regardless of what happens in Washington, women need you right here in Boise, Idaho.
Your continued prayers and support is so important to us.
